The company was founded in 1985 in California by the athlete Steve Furniss (an Olympic Bronze Medallist and subsequently captain of the U.S.A. Swim Team in the 1976 Olympics) and Joseph DiLorenzo (president and owner of TYR Sport, Inc. and its sister swimwear company). Initially, TYR served the competitive swimming market with fun and fashionable prints. Since then, it has grown into a global brand in over forty international markets all over the world, and is still staffed by athletes. Competitive swimming and triathlon spirit encompasses their offices, and they are committed to helping athletes obtain peak performance through innovation and design.
At the end of 2013 Tyr was delighted to announce that four times Olympic Gold Medallist Matt Grevers had re-signed with them until 2016. Since signing the talented college athlete over a decade ago in 2003, Grevers has carved out his track record in swimming history. At the 2012 Olympics in London, he won a Gold medal for the U.S.A. and set a new Olympic record in the 100 metres backstroke event with a time of 52.18 seconds. The swimmer won another Gold medal in the 400m medley relay and a Silver in the 400m freestyle.
In addition to the two Gold medals and one Silver medal that Grevers won in the 2008 Beijing Games, his total Olympic medal count is currently an outstanding six. "Being a Tyr athlete means I'm part of a family and something greater than myself", he said. He mentions being very inspired by swimming for the entire Tyr Company and not just for himself. Grevers is currently training for the 2014 World Trials Team, saying he is totally focused on swimming and gaining as much international experience as possible to prepare for the next Olympiad in Rio in 2016.
