With party season just around the corner, now's a great time to take the plunge and shape and tone your body for your tight tucks or skimpy skirt. So what swimming style do you use, what calories do you burn and what affects will it have on your body? Front Crawl (Freestyle) How will it help your body? Front crawl is the fastest stroke and will tone your glutes, shoulders and abdominals and out of all swimming styles, strenthens the back the most. How many calories will it burn? Swimming is a sport which will use all major muscle groups at once so it's a fantastic calorie burner. Good freestylers will burn around 100 calories every 10 minutes which is more than jogging. Breaststroke How will it help your body? Breaststroke helps to expand the lungs and works the chest muscles, (some women believe it even enhances their bust) tones the bra strap area, works the inner thigh, triceps, shoulders, legs and hamstrings. However, it's a stroke which is designed for long distance swimming and one that will tone the heart and lungs, Backstroke How will it help your body? If you sit at a desk all day then backstroke is a great antidote because it helps to elongate the hip flexors. It will help tone the stomach, legs, arms, shoulders and buttocks. How many calories will it burn? You can expect to burn 80 calories every 10 minutes with backstroke. It uses different muscle groups and helps to relax with easy breathing, definitely worth putting into your pool session. Butterfly How will it help your body? Butterfly is quite a complex stroke which will create fantastic upper-body strength. It strengthens and tones the chest, arms, triceps, abdominals and back muscles as well as stretching the body and incresing fleibility. How many calories will it burn? Being the most difficult swimming stroke, butterfly will burn the most calories, a whopping 150 calories every 10 minutes!
