Getting To Grips With Goggles - For Your Little Swimmer

Starting swimming lessons is a big and exciting step for your child—and having the right kit makes all the difference. One of the most common pieces of equipment you’ll hear about? Goggles! While they might seem like a small thing, a good pair of goggles can help your little one feel more confident and comfortable in the water.

But we know that getting your child used to goggles isn’t always as easy as popping them on and jumping in. Here are a few helpful tips and a fun video, to make the experience a smooth one—for both of you!

1. Start Slowly at Home

Before the first swimming lesson, let your child try their goggles on at home. Encourage them to wear them in the bath or even during water play in the garden. This helps them get used to the feel of goggles on their face in a relaxed setting.

2. Choose Goggles That Fit Well

Not all goggles are created equal! Look for child-sized goggles with a soft, comfortable seal and an adjustable strap. The fit should be snug enough to keep water out but not so tight that it causes discomfort. A good fit can make a big difference in how long they’ll happily wear them.

3. Make It Fun

Let your child choose their goggles in a fun colour or pattern they love—whether it's pink, blue, or something with dinosaurs or unicorns! Involving them in the process gives them a sense of ownership and can make them more excited to wear them.

4. Practice Putting Them On and Off

Teach your child how to put goggles on and take them off gently. A little practice can prevent any hair-pulling mishaps or pinched skin, which can put them off wearing goggles altogether.

5. Don’t Stress If They’re Not Keen Right Away

Some children love goggles from the start; others take a bit longer. That’s perfectly okay! Don’t force it. Allow them to gradually build up to using them, and talk positively about how goggles help us see underwater and protect our eyes.

6. Keep a Spare Pair

If your child relies on their goggles for comfort, having a backup pair in the swim bag is always a good shout—just in case!

Happy swimming, and here’s to confident little splashers in comfy goggles!
